Winter 2009 news and events and review of 2008

Winter here at Highfield means a slightly slower pace of life – laying hedgerows, planting trees and checking the sheep is the order of the day.

We were extremely busy with the “Seed to Loaf Roadshow “ in 2008 – and things started off on a high with the 2008 Devon County Show. We were part of the Year of Food and Farming feature with Devon Young Farmers and were honoured that the Duchess of Cornwall visited us and made a bread roll of her own in our mobile wood fired oven . When it was ready she took it away and said she would have it for her lunch !

Following on from the Devon County Show we had a hectic programme of school visits which meant overall during 2008 over 6000 schoolchildren took part in the Seed to Loaf Roadshow learning more about where their food comes from and how it is produced.

The year culminated for us at the Bayer/Farming and Countryside Education Awards , which were held at the Kensington Roof Gardens in London. We were very honoured to receive the awards for “Farm to Classroom” and the overall award for “The Very Best in Farm Education”.

We are already booking up a busy programme for 2009 – 13 school visits in East Devon in February and March) kindly supported by East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and also :
